In the case of Dred Scott v Sanford, Dred Scott was a slave who was taken to a free state, Illinois, then taken to a free territory, Wisconsion, but Scott was still considered enslaved by his owner. When Scott returned back to Missouri, his slave state, he decided to sue his owner for his freedom. The final decision of the Supremem Court was not in favor with Dred Scott, and this case was the beginnning of "African Americans are not citizens." The ruling of the court was that slavery is allowerd to be carried into free territories/states beucase the government can't take away someone's property, and slaves were considered property not people.
