This Documentary took place in Mississippi during 1964. Back then Mississippi was still a very segregated and racist state. "Freedom Summer" was about getting African Americans to vote in Mississippi. Compared to other states that had about 40-60% of their African American population registered to vote, Mississippi only had about 7%. This was due to the challenging literacy tests and the fact that most African Americans were just plain scared to vote. The white population of Mississippi would do anything in their power to keep blacks from taking part in politics.
In order to help African Americans register to vote a group of white students joined civil rights activists to spread the word around the country about what is happening in Mississippi, hoping to help those African Americans there vote. This was a very eyeopening and helpful documentary.
