In class today we had two groups discuss important events and important people of the Civil Rights Era.
The first group talked about five events that made a huge impact during this era. The first event was the marches from Selma to Montgomery. This march took place in Alabama, a very racist state at the time, to make awareness that blacks should have voter rights. This was a violent and even deadly march. The next event was the Montgomery Bus Boycott. All African Americans refused to ride city buses. Rosa Parks was famous for refusing to GET OFF a bus that was meant for whites only, which started these boycotts.
Then there was the Greensboro Lunch Counter Sit-ins and also Freedom Riders, both being lead and supported by college students.
The second group to present talked about famous/well-known people of this era. Bayard Rustin, was the second hand man to the famous Martin Luther King Jr.. Rustin helped fight against racial discrimination.
Emmett Till was a young kid who was said to be "flirting" with a white woman. He was then brutally beaten to death for what he was so called accused of doing. Some other important people were Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, and Medgar Evers.
